And.ID - Sand on the Floor

  • What a difference a release makes. While Marc Antona's "Simple Venus" shocked and awed in its power to elicit little response, And.Id's latest for Mobilee is a moody two-tracker that reminds you of what made this label great. While Antona's work reflects the worst of the faceless and restrained minimal techno producer, And.Id brings his trumpet along to the studio, eager to give his work a unique sonic signature. Andreas Dimitriadis, the producer behind the project, introduced his live horn playing on "One Is Not Enough" earlier in the year and it comes out again on "Sand on the Floor," which features what amounts to a pompous hunting call. But as a call to arms, it works: Undergirded by some nice conga work Dimitriadis splits the difference between dance floor functionalism and auteurist techno. (It doesn't hurt that the organ that forms the melodic base reminds of Josh Wink's excellent "Stay Out All Night" either.) Because of the track names here, you can't help but get the feeling that "Acapulco" is also meant to be a beach tune. But while I didn't get that from "Sand," you can hear it quite clearly in the percussion of "Acapulco." There's a bit more syncopation and urgency to the proceedings, though things stay relatively light in tone throughout. (Helped along by the voice saying "summertime" undoubtedly.) With that synth sound that sounds like a wimpy dog barking it's hardly original, but unlike Antona, you sense that someone is actually making the music that you're listening to. It's a start.
