Sebastien San - Jupiter/Juno EP

  • Hot on the heels of his "Movement" release on Rush Hour, Sebastien San continues the excellent Echocord Colour series with two tracks of prime deepness, this time on purple wax. "Jupiter" is a slow-motion moon bounce in the tradition of classic Chicago house, with a simplicity of movement and a tempo closer to classic Trax material than anything that passes for "house" speed this decade. Pitched up, this is choice mix-fodder; in real-time, it's one for the heads in the chill-out room. In either case, this is certainly a nice tool for the box. On the flip, "Juno" is crafted in the classic Detroit mode, as deep, melancholy chords give way to a driving bass drum and hi-hat pattern, and eventually a whiplash snare, that recall early Transmat and Metroplex recordings. The dual analog leads alternate with each other, slinging bass notes back and forth at each other across I-94 while a soaring series of high notes raises things to a spiritual level. It's a perfect counterpart to "Rising Sun," San's Planet E release earlier this year, and the influence of the Motor City on his sound is apparent. On both tracks, the analog sounds and bouncing beats fit perfectly with the ethos of the Colour imprint to stretch the musical boundaries of the main Echocord label while still maintaining a tie to the original dub-derived sound.
