Rustie - Zig-Zag

  • Another slab of crippled crunk, "Zig-Zag" finds LuckyMe tyke Rustie exhibiting his usual blanket of blitzkrieg beats, but this time dressed up ready for a dance. Where his previous releases have sat stoned as deformed basslines rubbed lethargically up against each other, this is an incessant hyphy grind with the murky hip-hop space loops that saw him signed on to the Warp roster knitted into the mix. Following three reprints of the Café De Phresh 12-inch, "Zig-Zag" picks at the same suffocating 8-bit bleats that Jagz the Smack EP fed on. "Response," a track from that EP, is probably the closest to "Zig-Zag" that he's previously released, but here it's wound up a few knots. Tanked up on WKDs and ready for the floor, it's more like some maddened midway between Grandmaster Flash and Black Dice. Away from the usual marriage of sounds between The Neptunes' brow-beaten funk and Flying Lotus' ambient tendencies, this is no doubt an envious response to the ladies slow dancing on the dance floor to fellow Glaswegian upstart Hudson Mohawke's commandeering of Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)."
