Super Flu - Rattelschneck

  • With their third release on Traum in the last 12 months, as well as a clutch remix of Dominik Eulberg, Super Flu are clearly being groomed as one of the label's go-to acts. The timing of this release couldn't be better, then; "Rattelschneck" just sounds like a big record. The track is obviously meant to emulate the dangerous, sidewinding movement of a predatory serpent, but if "Rattelschneck" were merely a gimmick, it wouldn't be nearly as effective. Instead, the rattlesnake manifests itself in myriad ways, from the various repeated runs of snapping, detuned percussion to the big, swelling skid of a synth riff that recurs throughout. It isn't just one big "noise" dropped in for effect, but more a feel and an attitude manifested through the deployment of several varied rhythmic and melodic elements. Add in a giant-sized break that pays off in a very big way and suddenly, the late summer haze has its soundtrack. On the flip, "Deathmetal (Schöne Frauen haben große Handtaschen)," which translates as "Beautiful girls have large handbags," works a deep, clipped string sample and some low-level analog snap, crackle, and pop into a dark, harsh groove. I'm not sure that the Japanese girl vocal sample works in the track's favor, but it isn't overwhelming and is easily overlooked. The compressed, nearly crushed drum clatter more than makes up for it. Super Flu have done their part here to move up to the next level; now the world just needs to stand up and take notice.
