Dub Kult - Flyswat EP

  • Give Dub Kult points for trying. And admire him for going the novelty route. And wonder where the hell he came up with the sound that approximates a fly so uncannily well. But don't bother playing it out. I have to admit it: when I heard this track was a dance track that sampled a buzzing fly, I was interested too. I'm a sucker for a concept. But when you actually hear it, it becomes apparent that that's all it is. Just a concept. Sure, Dub Kult weaves the buzzing into the beat—every once in a while—but there's no rhyme or reason to it, except the fact that it sounds kinda cool. And, when taken in concert with the limp rolling backing, it's nothing to get excited over. 'The Fly' simply ends up as annoying as…well, you know the rest. The A-side will get all the attention, but don’t overlook 'Brave & Afraid', which is a stellar B. Where the music in 'The Fly' is subservient to the sample, in 'Brave…' both work in tandem. It's no peak-time stormer, just a quality building block that dislocates the senses properly via disembodied vocals and pounding bass. That said, keep bringing on the novelty: the minimal world could do with more records like this—even if this time, it doesn't exactly work.
