- Kept on track by a breadcrumb trail of woodblock taps, Monika Kruse’s ‘Changes of Perception’ seems to follow the well-trodden path of predictable electro-techno, but as the woodblock slowly starts to hypnotically wind and yield, a quiet intensity begins to assemble. It’s a three-stage rocket of a track, and one that doesn’t even reach its peak until it is two thirds done. But when the peak arrives, it really arrives, with grooving electro melodies lashing against a drowsy vortex of synths in a manner which is bound to cause a few smiles even in the darkest of clubs. Best of all, there’s not a hint of neo-trance flutterings that studio partner Gregor Tresher seems to be obsessed with lately.
But while the understated menace of the original is good, Marek Hemmann’s remix is the reason you’ll probably keep this release in your box. Hemmann has been on a tear of late (Check out his recent remixes of Markus Meinhardt and Dusty Kid for the evidence), and this is no exception. It’s a sound reminiscent of Funk D’Void or Diynamic, which is to say quintessential tech house. The drums are punchy. The synths are deep and warm. The melodies are clean and mesmerising. It works together like a well-cut jigsaw puzzle, and although it’s not a style you haven’t heard before, Hemmann has taken the recipe and made a damn fine cake.
