- Lemos and Kreon's individual production style seems tailor made for remixes. Earlier this year, the Lookooshere EP saw the Greek duo marching in step with the likes of dOP or Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts, bringing an organic jazzy edge to digital house and techno, and even playing physical instruments. Now that mix of live instruments and techno continues with a remix EP, this time with The Wighnomy Brothers, Art Bleek, and Anthony Collins behind the boards.
We've already heard Reboot stretch Kreon's ‘Shake N Make’ into a drowsy piece of k-house jazz this year, showing that there's a ripple effect when it comes to the value of new sounds in house and techno. Unfortunately, Bleek’s dub-house remix of ‘Lookoshere’ renders things a little too straight up. Despite a decent early evening feel it could probably pass for one of his own tracks with bits of the original stuck on, an obvious risk with such unorthodox source material. The Wighnomy Brothers' Rollmops Mix adds their trademark reverberating drums and deep sub-bass, but given some of their housier excursions of late it feels a bit like a missed opportunity, and very like the remixes they were putting out three or four years ago.
The slack then, is left to Anthony Collins, who provides a drawn out woozy rework of ‘Lyly'Shere’ that almost betters the original. What starts off slow reaches a psychedelic climax over almost ten minutes, splashing pianos and horns onto a sweat drenched, sloppy beat. It’s a true 5 a.m. anthem, and the kind of remix that reminds you of the point of the format: for one artist's sound to reinvigorate another's.
And with so many artists such as Lemos and Kreon providing "live" source material, it’s a good season for remixers. Collins mix especially proves that reworks can be just as interesting as the original tunes themselves.
