Jackmate - Mont Blanc

  • It might seem counter-intuitive to call Michel Baumann a quiet achiever, considering the intensity of his work as Jackmate. But nonetheless it seems appropriate: few people working in the house-techno spectrum channel so much high quality music with so little fanfare. Of all the DJ/producer/label-owners currently working in this vein, perhaps only Move D is in the same league. Pay attention: not only has Baumann’s label Philpot has released some of the finest tracks by other artists of late, his new Soulphiction album is just about to drop. But in the meantime, here’s one for the fanged beasts of the wee smalls, a one sided limited edition release on Philpot’s techno sub-label Phil e. ‘Mont Blanc’ is dark, it’s deep, and it churns and builds through three minutes of nebulous atmospheres before letting the love drop. There are obvious touchpoints and referents here, like Redshape, UR, Planetary Assault Systems, as well as Common Factor’s darkest moods. But in Baumann’s hands everything is smaller, neater and more tantalising than might otherwise be: like his most hardhitting and funky tracks (‘Walls’, ‘Scattered Brains’, ‘Ghetto of My Mind’), ‘Mont Blanc’ somehow makes being kicked in the bits seem tormentingly brief. Comes in dark, goes deep, kicks hard, fucks off. More please.
