Tolga Fidan - All Pleasure is Relief EP

  • Like many of the acts on Vakant, Tolga’s Fidan’s sound could loosely be termed "micro tribal", a mini-genre of rolling (and usually very long) percussive tracks overlaid with an acoustic high end. Think Mathias Kaden, recent Daniel Stefanik, Bruno Pronsato and of course Villalobos. In general, it’s a style which is all about unfolding a mess of elements and ideas and seeing how they work out in concert with one another. The acoustic element in 'All Pleasure Is Relief' picks up on the popular recent minimal rage for all things Spanish (I blame Luciano & co.), this time a flamenco guitar, which arrives nearly five minutes into its 11-minute running time. It's lovingly delayed, stretched and tugged, and a welcome addition to an already solid groove. Then it disappears, and Fidan seems to realize that a groove isn't good enough on its own, and begins to pile on elements, bringing in a sampled voice and another bassline. Elegant and lithe, 'All Pleasure Is Relief' is a bracing track. The B-side track 'For Our Fathers' once again has flamenco guitar, but this time the beat hits harder and the bass deeper. While the A-side sometimes sounds like a dub, with its middle torn out to create an almost aquatic feel, 'For Our Fathers' is fuller, more world-music sounding, and more interested in the high end than the rhythm, and as such is probably better for home listening. It's sublime, nonetheless.
