Sebrok - Pyrolator

  • Only one letter separates Berlin newcomer Sebrok from deep house maverick Sebo K, and both favour a similarly spartan palette of sounds. Paso label founder and Tresor resident Sebrok, however, doesn't share the latter's interest in big tones and house leanings—the three tracks on 'Pyrolator' are little more than bare bones techno tools. You've usually got to take the promo blurb with a pinch of salt but this nails it: “’Pyrolator’ doesn't deviate, doesn't look left or right—it just keeps going forward.' This is music very much aligned with the theory that minimal evolved from Berlin partygoers getting so wrecked they would dance to a beaten saucepan. Listening to ‘Pyrolator’ sober I just want it to stop: the scraped woodblocks, gloomy pads and clipped gasps all help, but the relentless banging overpowers everything. The deliciously named ‘Boob Tube’ meanwhile offers something much more enticing, with whip-crack percussion worthy of Mobilee’s finest beside petite vintage bleeps and nasty synth groans. It’s positively dynamic in this company. 'Almost Famous' might be wishful thinking, but offers a pleasant distraction, with gentle Italo melodies gradually morphing into something snappy, but again the straight-shooting grows wearisome. In this instance one out of three ain't bad.
