Headman - Catch Me

  • Headman rode the crest of the punk funk wave back in the early ‘00s with releases like So Then! which married cowbells, live drums, electronic instruments and rock and roll sensibilities. Since then Robi Insinna has released two albums and Catch Me is his third. It's being touted as his most mature work yet, which is ironic because these twelve songs are crippled by the lack of any real progression from the same sound. If anything it's worse than what came before and crushingly depressing in its refusal to leave the middle of the road, to kick you in the face and make you want to turn it up. Even a little bit. Catch me is average, OK, fine. Whatever. Ploughing through the album you'll find yourself thinking that the tracks sound like somebody else, only not as good. 'Song 8' is a bit like LFO's 'Freak' with all the alluring freakery ironed out and 'Brave' resembles a duller, more spaced out Chemical Brothers. Headman also has developed a knack for the kind of electro/rock and roll/pop drivel that populates Radio 1 during the daytime. A third of the album is made up of these tracks, and each could pass for the other. If you're after this kind of sound there's far better and more interesting artists out there like Friendly Fires, Spektrum and LCD Soundsystem or you could look back further to Lizzy Mercier Descloux or ESG. LCD make an interesting counterpoint to Headman having been around, to paraphrase James Murphy, back at the beginning when this style became trendy. LCD's last album showed a group honing their sound, tightening up and reaching new emotional heights, praise which right now seems a long way off for Headman.
