Tayo Meets Baobinga Feat MC Spyda - Style & Trend

  • “Brand new style, brand new trend” raps Spyda on the title track of this EP, later adding “this is some breakbeat, this is some bashment, this a something to use up me talent”. Given the habit of every MC (Spyda included) to talk a good game, this kind of claim should be normally be taken with a raised eyebrow. In this case, though, you can lower that eyebrow—slightly. 'Style' has a jacking Casio off-beat but also the kind of electronic roughness, Gameboy effects and blapping synths you'd expect on a Kitsune Maison release. The track is an electric implosion of roots, electro and beats that matches Man Recordings' shamless blending of frenetic-paced genres. Tayo, probably best known for his breakbeat releases, has been moving away from the 'musical breaks genre' for some time now to what he calls 'really twisty beats'. 'Style' shows he's definitely keeping his word. Also on the single is 'Choppa Riddim', a version of 'Style' without the rapping but added layers of percussion to make it even more turbo charged than the original. At times there's nothing more than the thudding, convulsive beat whilst in other places it jerks and humps like a New Rave kid wigging out to Dancehall—just the kind of behaviour this is going to encourage.
