Ajello - Magic Feet

  • Belgian label Radius has been rooting out and re-releasing classic Italo and disco gems for four years now, and it's thanks largely to them and Automan that treasures like 'Spacer Woman' and 'Cybernetic Love' are being played out and enjoyed for the first time in ages. The label has also been releasing new Italo (inspired) records, and 'Magic Feet' is one of them. Ajello's take on the sound is deep, progressive and, unfortunately, somewhat generic and plodding. Measure these four tracks against something like the excellent 'Camaro's Gang' on the Best of Superradio (also on Radius) and, well, there's no comparison. Of course, Ajello's take is slightly different, deeper and more meditative, but the best part about Italo for my money was that it didn't take itself too seriously and made you want to dance in a foolish, flamboyant fashion—an element sadly lacking in 'Magic Feet'. Of the tracks, 'Music Hall' hints at Metro Area but without the charm or uncluttered elegance. Daniele Baldelli comes aboard for 'Cosmology', which kicks off with a promising, anxious arpeggiated bassline but skirts too close to the sound of '80s video games for comfort. The remaining two are likely to leave you overflowing with indifference. 'Living With Passion' is the poor cousin of a Get Physical release, and the title track is a straightforward electro house effort. Both have spacey effects layered over the top and whilst 'Living With Passion' is more appealing due to its ethereal and ghostly sounds, neither is going to excite your ears.
