Peter Grummich - Another Day EP

  • Veering from construction site ear-damage to nursery school twee, Peter Grummich has never been easy to pigeonhole. Early releases for Auftrieb and Kompakt toyed with subtle rhythmic experiments within punishing 4/4 structures, built from scratches, hiss and grinding sawtooths. Later records on Shitkatapult began to get confusing: schaffel tunes with dusty, tough hatless beats softened up by sampled dog toys and incongruous bleeps. A mix followed, Club Maria Berlin: Dirty Floor, which did what it said on the tin, followed by his first solo album Switch Off the Soap Opera, both for Shitkatapult. This year’s been his busiest yet, with five releases for five different labels, but the two tracks on ‘Another Day’ are arguably the least interesting of the lot. But they are novel. ‘What’s up Adults?!’ pairs a clip-clop kick with a breathy bassline while some crazed Laplander batters away on sleigh-bells. A misjudged melody played on a dying Casio provides the treble, while the shiftless minimal processing breaks up for peculiar squeaks and hiccupping cowbells. The B-side is a tamer affair (not that the A is particularly rough), reminiscent of nineties ambient techno drawn with 00s minimal tools. M_nus steam puffs pop up through hissing hats and clinking drums, and the rhythm, drawn out over long repetitive sections, makes sense eventually. Both these tracks amuse in a manner not dissimilar to early Profan or Studio 1 experiments, but without the rigour; on the floor they’d work as a bridge between more aggressive minimal tracks but would struggle to grab the spotlight. Interested parties would do better to check out ‘Magic Mushroom Box’, ‘Gomorra’ or ‘Fresh Air Breezin’, which are all more effective, and funky.
