Stewart Walker - Concentricity Remixes

  • Having delivered one of the standout longplayers of the year with Concentricity, Stewart Walker’s productions have been driving dancefloors all summer. Now with fall just around the corner, three of the album’s highlights have been given a new lease on life thanks to remix treatments courtesy of Walker’s compadres. Whereas Concentricity, with its richly detailed rhythmic patterns and dense melodic clusters, was primarily intended for home listening, these re-versions strip the tracks back to the essentials and transform them into a set of lean and effective DJ tools. Jeff Samuel's ace re-interpretation of 'We Welcome Utopia!!!' trims the fat from the beat and re-casts the lush keys that swirled about the original as cycling patterns of pinprick tones and ominously descending chords. By far the most dancefloor oriented cut here, Samuel’s remix is sure to get heavy play, but Touane's take on 'Fragile Chemistry' is no slouch either. Reining in the album version’s spacious arrangement, Touane crafts a taut minimal stormer that is hypnotic in its relentless forward motion. Unfortunately, the mix never quite reaches the point of release it promises, instead being content to ride out the beat over the course of seven minutes. Things cap off with Robag Wruhme’s blissed out remix of 'Fernbank 1991', which for my money is the best of the bunch, featuring sumptuous drifts of ambience atop deft percussion programming that references everything from tech house to jazz but never fails beckon you towards the floor. All in all, this is a solid twelve that is sure to have something for DJs of every stripe, as well as an excellent companion piece to Walker’s album. Concentricity will be extending its reach well into the winter with this one.
