DK7 - Where's The Fun? (Remixes)

  • If you’re fond of losing it to electro house, chances are you'll have heard a DK7 record. Mark O’Sullivan and Jesper Dahlbäck’s output under the name wears its New Romantic influence on its sleeve, and while Jesper is not as prolific as his cousin John, his productions show more maturity – witness his great remix of 'Science' for Jori Hulkonnen – and as a result, they age better. Here DK7 offer up a sole cut in 'Instone', a deeper outing than recent efforts 'Killer' and 'Emission'. This one is built on acidic squiggles and O'Sullivan’s echo chamber vocals over a bare pulse of a backbeat to keep it moving along, and the result is a delicate electro house track – possibly good early evening gear for the patient DJ, though not one of DK7's more immediate affairs. On the B-side, Harthousers Zoo Brazil and Sweden’s Joel Mull remix DK7’s ‘Where’s The Fun’ from 2005 (You might have heard Sten’s version on ‘Immer 2’). Zoo Brazil varies the punchy electro of the original by dicing up O'Sullivan’s vocal further still, and again it’s a subdued effort – surprisingly so, considering Zoo Brazil’s electro house is often harsher and acid-lined (see 'Last Days') – although the tail has a sting in it here. A Germanic-sounding piece that isn’t really strong enough to distinguish itself from its ilk, it should nevertheless appeal to fans of the genre looking to let their hair down. If by now, all this electro has you robot-dancing in your sleep, the 4/4 techno of Joel Mull’s Final Love remix might appeal. This has all the ingredients of a standard, driving, European techno workout - pinging hi-hats, that stomping beat heard on so many Beyer tracks – but hang on in there because the predictability subsides after four minutes and we get treated to a lovely, spacey sequence that’s simply classic Mull. The only problem is the track runs out before this hook gets enough love, but look on the bright side: it leaves you wanting more. A lot of variety here on both sides of the electro/techno fence, though it isn't quite up to the standards to DK7’s previous 12” 'Killer'.
