Chris Lake - Carry Me Away

  • Chris Lake has had more success in his music then his choice of football teams (he is a Norwich City fan). He’s been diverse: His early progressive rethinks of The Prodigy and Annie Lennox were tough-minded enough to get fists pumping at 4am, while his ‘Shiver’ as Echofalls was lush and melodic enough to get the lighters out, but it was with ‘Changes’ where Lake really found home, and success. Whether it was on the terraces of Ibiza or with Sky Sports pundits, it was a straight vocal house cut that was a hit in the clubs and on the box. Catchy in just the right way to be massive. ‘Carry Me Away’ feels like Lake is gunning for the same kind of success. Change is good, so they say, but sticking to what works is not a bad strategy either. The piano lines here may not be as distinct as ‘Changes’, but it has the same warmth, and the vocals of Emma Hewitt sound very much at home (Lake must have thought ahead this time – ‘Changes’ started out life as an instrumental but failed to hit). Pushing the envelope? Perhaps not. Delivering the goods again? Yes. Unfortunately, the remixes never rise above the ordinary. Aston Shuffle delivers a somewhat ‘missed the boat’ electrohouse mix, while the effort from the normally spot on Sebastien Leger is average. The best here is the Micky Slim & Funkagenda Spank'd mix, but that isn’t saying much. It’s all a bit too bleepy and lacks the summer charm of the original.
