Pele - Childhood’s End

  • Like you’d expect from Connaisseur this has a lot of nice detail going on underneath on the drums and with the assorted secondary melodic parts. Unfortunately it’s also got one of those simple marching-band melodies that repeats for three bars and then adds an extra note on the fourth, and all played with one of those tinfoil-tasting synths that always make me think of ‘Insomnia’. On the breakdowns it gets a kind of filtered treatment giving a fat midrange blare before the beats come back in. Basically it’s very anthemic in that tucked-in-shirt side-to-side dance kind of way. All very masculine, blokey and acceptable. Should go down a storm in Ibiza. The Kollectiv Turnstrasse remix on the flip is a much subtler and creepier affair. The main melody is muted and little nagging sounds crawl around in the background hinting at things to come but never coming fully out in the open. Overall it’s very much in the Connaisseur style of tasteful tech-house, but not destined to be one of their vintage recordings.
