Touane - Eiertanz

  • Touane gained a lot of exposure last summer with one of the standout cuts on Tiefschwarz’ ‘Fabric 29’ ('Bassic'), but he’s been recording a lot more, for Persona, Dumb-Unit and now Lan Muzik, Exercise One’s Berlin home for rolling minimal. 'Eirtanz' proceeds along an initially squelchy route, underpinned by a solid kick and bass that soon gives way to a driving funk-laden strut that lays the foundation for all manner of woozy noises to disappear in and out of the mix. The sounds on this will recall videogames to many, but I'm also reminded of Trentemoller's earlier efforts. The feeling continues with 'Potato Nose', an altogether sparser piece of work that nevertheless ploughs the same furrow. There's a stripped down feel to both of the tracks, although 'Potato Nose' slightly ups the tempo, sacrificing the wonkiness of 'Eirtanz' for synthesised talking drums. Both tracks are competent pieces of work, but in the end they are too similar to each other, and as a package this lacks that certain spark that lifts techno out of the ordinary. A solid couple of DJ tools that should keep the floor simmering, but they will hardly bring it to the boil.
