The Streets - Let's Push Things Forward

  • The second single to be lifted off The Streets' very well rated album, Original Pirate Material, is this vinyl with exclusive mixes that listener's miss out on the CD. No matter, head down to your nearest 2-step/garage club and it should be a much rewinded and highly requested track. The Streets, whom most of us probably first heard on the unbelievably awesome Stanton Warriors Stanton Session CD, tell us how life is in his native Burmingham, complete with Brummie accent and a good D-I-Y ethos to producing tracks. Catching the attention of some awesome garage and 2-step producers, Let's Push Things Forward is remixed into 3 different versions for all you vinyl junkies out there. Side A. Studio Gangsters remix Back in around '97 a strain of Garage house was born, it was called Speed Garage and it was a very 4/4 sound and relied heavily on 2 elements - a heavy bassline and a housey 4/4 beat. This remix utilises that very heavy bassline element and goes into 4/4 territory. Utilising some elements from the original, namely the trumpet sample and the male vocals and putting a speed garage twist on it. Definitely a party starter! Side B1. Zed Bias remix For those who have listened to the Original album version, this remix is quite similar to the original, with a more 2-step beat to it, whereas the original was more of a reggae styled beat. This is the only remix on this single which keeps the rap vocals intact. Side B2. DJ Mystery remix More bassline madness like the Studio Gangsters remix, however this one sits on top of a beat so syncopated you'd be hard pressed to find a dance routine to it. Nice one to bop your head to. A lot of 2-step producers are going for that really syncopated drum beat style, probably to confuse the people on the dancefloor, no matter, it still sound wicked. This song is basically a comment on the state of a lot of 2 step tracks being produced. The male vocals clearly announce "You say that everything sounds the same..." and Mike himself states that "I make bangers not anthems, leave that for the Artful Dodger". You're probably thinking these are bold statements to make, right? Well after hearing this release I'd say he was definitely on the right track.
