Ost & Kjex – Thru with Being Bad

  • Wacky normally ain’t good. Ost and Kjex means “cheese and biscuits” in Norwegian and apparently their first album was constructed entirely out of samples derived from these two normally silent foods. Fortunately for us, the wackiness has been left behind with their more recent offerings. They melted heads last year with ‘How Not to be a Biscuit’, which took a kind of Phil Spector Wall of Sound approach to trippy musical acrobatics. That basic format hasn’t changed here, and the overall style is very similar. There’s a kind of galloping rhythm to ‘Thru With Being Bad’ with insistent double time bleeps making it tumble forward infectiously. The breakdowns are huge and multi-leveled and it’ll certainly get eyes rolling and limbs twitching as the sound warps and curves through the midrange before the beat kicks back in. ‘The Roquefort Files’ is a bit more trancey and straightforward and maybe Kjex was responsible for its electrohouse bassline, which is distinctly cheesy. But it still has that skewed energy that characterizes the Ost and Kjex sound, so if it is cheese, it is at least fresh cheese. Overall this is a very solid release which will appeal strongly to anyone that enjoyed ‘How Not to be a Biscuit’. Their style is not so surprising second time around, but these tracks have enough substance to them for that not to matter.
