Touane - Prosa EP

  • Touane is an Italian producer who has released on Lan Muzic and Trenton, but most often Stewart Walker’s Persona label. The label names should clue you into his style: organic minimal techno with an emphasis on layers – something I very much appreciate. ‘Prosa’ is further proof that Touane is moving away from the house of earlier ‘Gum’ or the noisiness of ‘Baptism Spree’ towards straighter, edgier techno, but while his latest efforts here are more frenetic, well-oiled and mature, unfortunately, they’re also a little less fun. The EP is a very direct dancefloor release: ‘Wisdom Tooth’ is the strongest cut, creating a late morning flavour with jack, bounce and seedy drums that sit very well in the mix. A2 ‘Previsioni’ is more like earlier Touane with deep pads and crisp hi-hats, not quite as tight as something like Andy Stott on Modern Love, but getting there. The B-side, however, is more disappointing: ‘Poesia’ and ‘Prosa’ are creations from the same studio session, and there’s a feeling of 12” filler about them. Of the two, ‘Prosa’ might be worth checking, it’s a noiser take on the A1. Overall ‘Prosa’ is a little too cluttered and messy to stand out from the pack. Back to basics might be in order.
