Oracy - Mind Dance

  • The sample at the start tells us that 'Mind Dance' is concerned with telling us a bit about "what jazz sounds like" – odd then, that there's little in the way of jazz on this luxuriant nine-minute ride apart from the sampled shakers. 'Mind Dance' starts as it means to a goes on - as a Prescription-referencing deep houser, with gently undulating classic chords and a flat, fat kick, before the percussive elements – scuttling hats, stark rim-shots – and a bubbling bassline gradually take it up a notch. But not too much. It's all about those warm chords here, snaking though the track, lulling you into a pleasant deep house stupor… mmmm… On the flip of this yellow vinyl, 'Life Source' offers more for those who appreciated the hi-def techno of Oracy's previous release on Mojuba. Simple but striking glacial keys form the centrepiece of this track – but there's more going on: the kick is tougher, the bassline deeper while surging chord stabs, techy snares and jazzy hats combine for a nicely-balanced Detroit swirl. Occasional key changes keep it interesting, while the surprisingly lively drop adds bite. Nothing particularly new on offer on here – but this is a very definite sound will appeal to a small-but-dedicated number of crate diggers.
