DJ Quest – Letz Roll/Trunklets

  • DJ Quest comes out again with another 6/8 time signature breaks track. If any of you had read my review of his earlier 6/8 breaks track Tripod, then you will know of the praises I sang about it – it’s quite a mind bending tune and one to keep breaks producers on their toes. Trunklets and Letz Roll is Quest’s latest release and follows in a similar vein to the Tripod release – 6/8 track on one side and break beat roller on the other side. A. Letz Roll is more of the rolling breaks madness we’ve come to expect from DJ Quest. In typical 2-step style he mashes the kick drum with some wicked bass line. The breaks also have that early 90’s feel, due to the amount of hi-hat cymbals, which some 2-step producers are going back to, especially Shut Up & Dance who have made an interesting return to the dance scene. The title of the track really says it all – Letz Roll! B. Trunklets as mentioned before is the 6/8 track and one hell of a track this is. One noticeable feature of these 6/8 breaks is that they have a really slow feel to them, yet this is actually an uptempo freak. This is mainly due to the structure of the beats and the way it is counted. If you don’t know how to count 6/8 to match a 4/4 track then stay away from this as you can easily ruin a mix set. The bass drum keeps the beat going on this track, syncopating the 6/8 beat to create a stepping frenzy. The bass line gets all wobbly and sounds like a track to hop, jump and skip to. There’s also an interesting set of triplet beats to be heard when mixing this with a 4/4 track. Quite nice! This one appeared on the Rat Sessions Volume 1 mixed by the Quest himself.
