Ferrer & Sydenham - The Back Door

  • Two big names on the deep/afro/Latin house circuit, Jerome Sydenam and Dennis Ferrer, follow up their seminal gems ‘Stockholm-Go Bang’, ‘Timbuktu’ and of course ‘Sandcastles’ with ‘The Back Door’. Will these guys recieve another standing ovation or will they be exiting via the back stairwell? ‘The Back Door’ is a defiantly vinyl release, a slab of acetate pressed only on one side. Unlike most deep house cuts, the single track doesn’t hit you with an obvious hook, delicate vocal or choreographed melody, but this is far from an average cut – the build up is really worked at, a nice bassline rolling through a simple structure, archaic lightning samples cracking at its core, and softly hidden keys sounding out frosted and ghostly. The track brings to the table the same style and grace as Martino’s ‘Mars’. There’s a big nod to other Ibadan artists such as Kerri Chandler, but with its tight instrumentation and non-obvious melody and keys, this is a number that’ll have longevity – guys like Ron Trent, Osunlade Frankie Feliciano, and Dom Navarra will reach for this as a deep and textured instrumental that’ll provide fuel for late, late in the morning. Overall, these two top cats shouldn’t be looking for the exit signs just yet. In the current glut of more electronic and experimental sounds, the classicism of ‘The Back Door’ is audible and welcome. Major players like Dixon, Jeff Mills, Joe Claussell and Carl Craig will appreciate this one, as will hot and sweaty Southport Weekend regulars. Good music that rises above boundaries and genres.
