Nerk & Dirk Leyers - Dizzy Monster

  • "Dizzy" on the 'A' side is an abstract little shaker that opens with an off-kilter bassline that reminds me of an acid-house track from days gone by. This one has a real quizzical feel; little whirrs and bleeps interacting with the straight-up rhythm which stalls to allow a droning buzz into the amalgamation of sound. These momentary hold-ups play a cat-and-mouse game with the listener before reverting back to that peculiar bassline. If there was a video clip it might involve a laboratory scene - lots of bubbling liquid inside tubes and beakers with odd-looking sientists in white coats making mock revelations. Towards the end, the sonic recreation of a swarm of flies around a dead body further compounds the abnormal and curious feel to this track. Not that different from something you might expect from Trentemoller in terms of the way the track is structured. (7/10) On the flip, "Monster One" has a similar vibe although this one is a little darker but again makes use of little bleeps and glitchy noises. Lots of distortion give this track a warped feel and this incessant drone builds up acting as a bassline imposter that could swindle us all! Personally the A-side had a bigger impact on me right from the off as there appears to be a little more variance to it than the B-side, which tends to stick to the same pattern throughout. "Monster One" is quite bizarre and could be very effective in disorientating the most stable of individuals. For this reason alone, one can see how it might make it into a few DJ's boxes. (6/10)
