Plump DJs - Dr. Dub/Blackjack

  • Continuing with their full scale assault of releases after the release of Saturday Night Lotion, the Plump DJs present another single lifted from the album in the form of Dr. Dub. Lee and Andy have also been busy in the studio crafting music for Wipeout Pure on the PSP and they also present the exclusive tune Blackjack. Side A. Dr. Dub The intro to this tune opens up with a lone drum break on a very simple, four to the floor, kick and snare pattern which sounds like it loses its vigour as the intro progresses. Once the beat leaves a solo keyboard riff takes over joined by trademark Plumpy stabs and sweeps. A big synth drops which is lifted from the classic 80s tune "Doctor Doctor" by the Thompson Twins - crossing over between 80's electro-pop/nu-wave as can be heard in the electro acid licks which are present in the tune. There's also a vocal snippet dropped in for good measure as well. Interesting to note that when the Plumps released Plumpy Chunks, they were crossing into early 80's funk/disco and now they're doing the 80's electro-pop, what's next? Early 90's house? Side AA. Blackjack It's not the first time that the Plumps have recorded music for a video game, with Big Groovy Fucker making it onto the Wipeout Fusion soundtrack. With that in mind, it's easy to note that the break is heavily charged up to suit the supersonic speeds as experienced in the game. Trademark Plump production here with the bouncy snares and an underlying hook that gives the Plumps that certain hyped up edge. On top of that they've added in lots of percussion and a few well timed bass drops to emphasise a feeling of turbo-charged acceleration. Once the breakdown hits, a big ravey synth line goes solo and takes over for the rest of the tune. Not too sure if this would work on a dancefloor but on a racetrack where hyperspeed is everything, and everything is nothing unless you've got wicked tunes playing in the background this would be one of the tunes to play.
