Soul Of Man - MyLowDownDirty/Foxy Moron

  • It's been quite a while since the last Soul Of Man release however, if you consider the quality release that was Shake Em Down, then you'd understand that the Fingerlickin' head honchos only release tunes of the highest standard. Justin and Jem have teamed up once again and have pulled out all the stops for their latest release MyLowDownDirty and Foxy Moron. Side A. MyLowDownDirty It seems that Soul Of Man have found a new sound as they've dropped the crossover house-meets-breaks and gone for a more electro sound. The title of this tune is a cheeky reference to Mylo's Rikki from which they borrow the vocal riff. The breakbeat is the most syncopated I've heard from the Soul in a long time and harks back to the 80's electro breaks. Bassline wise, the boys drop a bass tone quite similar to the one that the Plumps used on their tune Acid Hustle. Throughout the tune, the vocals get cut up in various fashion to create variations whilst the bassline slowly progresses and builds up to a climax at the end. Side AA. Foxy Moron Foxy Moron was first heard on the Plump's Saturday Night Lotion release from earlier in the year, with an acappella of Lee Coombes' (Katherine Ellis' to be exact!) Salty laid on top. The tune kicks off with a charged up breakbeat, warning buzzers and a chopped up female vocal hook that gets featured throughout the tune. During the breakdown, they introduce the bassline and this time it has a slight rocky feel to it and it is accompanied by that familiar Soul Of Man chug in the background that always made tunes like Dirty Waltzer and The Drum feel so thick and rich in texture. As a bonus for all those who loved Soul Of Man's Dirty Waltzer and always wondered "hey I wish I had a DJ tool with these sounds on it", well look no further - the vinyl contains lock grooves of the scat routine (and no it doesn't say "funky techno" in an Australian accent) all contained on "Return Of the Waltzer.
