- The Wipeout videogame series have developed a solid reputation for having the strongest Electronic soundtrack in perhaps videogame history. From the days of Wipeout 1 on Playstation where the likes of Prodigy and Chemical Brothers unleashed their sound to Wipeout 3 where Sasha took over the soundtrack duties, there is no better way to travel at high speeds in a hovercraft while listening to some good solid tunes. Now as Sony look to push their PSP, the latest in Wipeout gaming, Wipeout Pure, looks set to continue the tradition of fine tunes as they release the soundtrack to the handheld game.
There are a host of good varied sounds here. ‘Naks Acid’ by Aphex Twin unleashes the more twisted sounds while the likes of Drumattic Twins and Elite Force showcase their adventurous breaks sounds. I particularly enjoyed FreQ Nasty’s groovy and upbeat ‘We Got Juice’. Paul Hartnoll of Orbital fame unleashes two pretty solid electronic cuts while there are some intense drum and bass sounds thanks to Photek’s ‘C-Note’. Ils’ ‘Saxtrax’ unleashes a chunky driving baseline, a true party highlight of the album while for me Way Out West bring the best from this album with the stunning ‘Pulse of Life’. Hybrid end things nicely with the quirky and intense sounds of ‘Zulu’.
The soundtrack is quite nice it must be said with intense moments not far between, but it perhaps lacks the variation and depth that previous wipeout soundtracks had. Nevertheless there are some great artists here doing some leftfield type stuff so it’s well worth a look.
