  • Born in Manchester in 1962 Carl Cox is a veteran of all things dance music. Certainly carving out a name in the industry over the past 20 years, Carl Cox's latest release comes from DMC, the latest in the revered Back to Mine compilations, busting out another classy addition to the series we go back to Carl's for the 19th addition, the nature of the CD is for "After hours grooving" with Cox stepping out from his familiar "Tech House" moniker, sliding in some old favourites that have influenced him all the way back when he was playing tunes for his family and friends. Recorded at Cafe Mambo in Ibiza the CD also features one of his own tunes (Gimme your Love) which comes of his next coming album "The Second Sign". First track let loose is Spring High a track from Ramsey Lewis the legendry jazz pianist who coming in with subtle jazz piano accompanied by do do do's and simple kit beat. Adding in some funky bass guitar keeping the whole feel of the track light and pleasurable. Sliding into the disco fever of Diana Ross, whom needs no introduction, with No one gets the Prize a spinning disco affair reminiscent of the early 70's. Grooving You drops in some incredibly funk fuelled bass guitar getting slapped around. Cut short by the big house beat of Everything is Gonna Be Alright taking you back to the 90's with a flashback of stabby, synth laden chords, long and drawn out on the other end of the keyboard, with short intermittent saxophone breaks throughout the track. Taking a step of the beaten track with the Style Councils classic track Long Hot Summer a strange addition but enjoyable never the less, it's electro 80's groove and synth riddled production and down tempo beat.Making an appearance is Groove Armada with Dan Solo flawless production only as they can do it, funky breaks, solid beat and old style beeps and breaks slipping into piano and bongo beat filtered interlude. Carl track, funnily enough, ends up on the CD Give Me Your Love a nice tune as his production skills shine through showing his diversity as a DJ and all round talent. 808 State's Pacific is a classic track on its own worthy on a CD by itself, the house, electro, breaks mix is one of the standout tunes for sure, the bird sample through the tune is distinct as it's rolling beat catchy as a cold in winter. With a taste of what's to come from Carl and insight of the man's versatility, not only as a DJ but as a producer, the latest release from the DMC crew has shown what the Back To Mine series is all about, a sort of "time out" for the DJ's to play the some personal favourites that would necessarily be appreciated or well received on the dancefloor. A fine collection of Carl's favourite tunes, well worth the listen.
