Krafty Kuts - Lock The Hype/Smash Your Breaks

  • Quite a surprising release from the Krafty one, especially after listening to his Finger Lickin Funk release on, you guessed it, Finger Lickin Records. This release taking on more of a nu skool breaks sound instead of the big beat (do they still use that term?), hip hoppy sound of Finger Lickin Funk. Lock The Hype: Uptempo breaks track, with a feelgood vibe almost 2-steppy. Wicked bassline, basically the only thing providing any form of melody in this track - hey it's a breaks track! Methinks Mr. Reeves is getting a bit of inspiration from his Plumpy friends as this track has that Plump DJ feel. This one should be big for a long time. 2002's Scram maybe? Smash Your Breaks: After turning the turntable on, forgetting that this was a 45, the turntable had it going at 33 and it got me thinking, ahhh he's gone back to his old hip hop breaks style, that is until the vocodered vocal snippets came in and sounded a little too slow - D'oh! Still didn't sound too bad at 33 but at 45 is where it's meant to be. Would be interesting to drop it twice in a set at both speeds and see how it goes! This flipside to Lock The Hype confirms Krafty's fascination with the Plump DJ sound yet still maintains a certain feel that it isn't a Plump DJ's track (Plump's seem to use similar beats in their tracks and remixes so it is quite easy to tell you are listening to a Plump DJ's track or remix). The main aspect of this track which grabs the listener's attention is the drum break and the vocodered rap lyrics on top. Put in some awesome production and this track sells itself. All in all a good release from Krafty's new label with Freddy Fresh, the future hopefully sees more good releases from the Against The Grain stable.
