30Hz - No Man's Land/Acid Day

  • Bristolian based production crew 30Hz have been immersing themselves in the breaks and grimey scene for sometime. Originally hailing from Washington DC, the pair decided to make the move across the pond where their output is more suited to the breaks sound being pushed in the region. Previous 30Hz releases included their bootleg of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" and "Temple" featuring the vocal talents of Yolanda which was a big hit with the likes of FreQ Nasty and Stereo 8. Now for 2004, 30Hz kick off their year with a new single - "No Man's Land/Acid Day" Side A. No Man's Land 30Hz take the best parts of house, breaks and grimey and add in a good measure of funk for No Man's Land. In terms of breakstep beats, this is probably the most "straight-beat" I have heard - think Plump DJ's rather than Darqwan on a funky breaks tip. 30Hz add in lots of percussive effects (congas, bongos and cowbells) on top giving it somewhat of a Latin feel and unleash a dirty synthetic bassline in the vein of DJ Quest. A good track to use when changing between various styles of breaks. Side B. Acid Day Acid Day continues 30Hz' fascination of funky breakbeats putting a little bounce into it and this time gives it a wobbly bassline, making this track more uplifting than the flipside. In the middle they give the bass line a little variation adding in a few bass drops here and there and towards the end they break up the beats creating a different shuffle for the dancefloor. 30Hz pull off a couple of decent breaks tracks here, good enough to bridge the gaps between breakbeat and breakstep/grimey (or whatever they choose to call it)
