Typesun - Make It Right

  • Typesun is a nomad, having roved from purple dubstep collabs with Guido to the FKA twigs-like synth-pop of last year's "Icebergs." A live feel has been one constant: the Bristolian is a drummer, and used live instruments as far back as the 2006 neo-soul number "The PL." Though it lacks the usual guest vocal, rare groove homage "Make It Right" is his most ambitious track yet. Which isn't to say it's the spit of the real thing: Typesun presumably lacks the orchestras of session players and vintage ribbon mics required for an "authentic" sound, and it's a little odd hearing these ideas rendered in crisp home-studio fidelity. Still, Typesun's love for the form shines through. He whisks us through a series of luscious arrangement ideas, opening with velvety strings and climaxing in a couple of disco breakdowns. So caught up in the track's symphonic sweep, he forgets to put a strong musical idea at its centre. When a vibraphone solo wafts past halfway through, it's hard to feel dissatisfied. On the B-side, FXHE's Jason Fine cuts a cleaner path through the lavish confusion. Looping the chords in smaller units and beefing up the bassline, his hypnotic house version could happily have bumped along for a little while longer.
