The Pilotwings - Molitor 71

  • Brothers From Different Mothers is a French label whose releases have come out across a range of formats. Ambient Party Turns Into An Orgy, a cassette compilation of squidgy, muted techno, preceded J-ZBEL's 7-inch of acid and adrenaline-shot breakbeat/jungle hybrids, How I Made My Mom & Sis' My Sexbot Slaves. Guillaume Lespinasse and Louis De La Gorce's second 12-inch as The Pilotwings is less radical in both form and content, but in the spirit of BFDM, it pushes at the perimeters of its influences. Of Molitor 71's four tracks, "Congo Libre" is the most faithful to the label's polyamory. A light breakbeat skip is anchored by earthy bass riffs and a supple, Four Tet-ish melody. That's a lot to begin with, but the sax that comes in later daubs gently onto The Pilotwings' canvas. "31 Septembre (On Va Tout Niker)" has a pan pipe melody that brings to mind Larry Heard and touches on the new age sound also on "Buraganda Overture," a beautiful choral passage with occasional drum roll bursts. These flourishes are less evident on "Les Invasions Babar." It's a pacy mix of Italo and electro that doesn't quite ignite the imagination like the rest of Molitor 71.
