worriedaboutsatan - The Woods / Blood

  • After March's outstanding Even Temper, which touched on all manner of eerie electronic mutations, Gavin Miller and Tom Ragsdale are back with another swampy dance floor gem for their own This Is It Forever label. Padded drums and the kiss of snares open up "The Woods" in a plush fug of chords. It's a typically lovely decoy from worriedaboutsatan, who like nothing more than to conjure the unexpected. Just as we're suitably wooed, the jungle breaks kick in all rough and tickly like a wool sweater. That might've been the time to turn off the drones and cinematic keys, but no, they're still pulsing in the swollen background. It's the kind of "this shouldn't work but it does" moment that keeps making these guys a bewitching anomaly. A competent techno piece thick with poignant strings and deeply pounding bass, "Blood" shows the pair can also be normal. They're great mood sculptors, and "Blood" is an excellent case in point, as it builds and stretches over a long six minutes. Three remixes round off the EP, chiefly taking the two originals into 4/4-focused weirdness. Pye Corner Audio's bubbling "Blood" retouch might be the best of the bunch, but frankly the remixes have nothing on the originals.
