Mark Broom - Stunned (97 Mix)

  • Robert Hood, Monobox and Floorplan are the names you usually see on M-Plant, and they all belong to the same person. Stunned is the rare record that comes stamped with a name other than Hood's, though UK producer Mark Broom is an ideologue of the Detroit pioneer's minimal techno if there ever was one. As the "97 Mix" appendage implies, "Stunned" dates back to the late '90s, originally released on the Pure Plastic label. It's presented here in a new live mix that pushes the drums to the front at the expense of everything else. It's hard to imagine "Stunned (97 Mix)" landing anywhere but M-Plant; it's almost sadistically simple, with an insectoid synth riff buzzing around kicks that only get more brutal as they motor on. Broom's updated mix doesn't tease anything new from the original "Stunned" so much as weaponize it. On the flip, "Decay" is marginally more approachable yet no less thrashing, built around a chugging riff and some fun hi-hat programming. Fans of Hood's ultra-streamlined techno will find Stunned (97 Mix) to be top-shelf material, but it also lacks some of Broom's unique charm. If this is any indication, landing a 12-inch on M-Plant means you should try to sound like its founder.
