Seba - Jungle Music

  • Drum & bass producers tend to romanticize jungle the same way that modern house producers do with the old Chicago stuff. Sebastian Ahrenberg's latest single, simply called "Jungle Music," is about as literal as it gets: breaks charge ahead as a voice matter-of-factly intones "jungle music." It's hard to tell if it's meant as tongue-in-cheek, but the rest of it is serious business—even the intro before the drop feels like it weighs two tons. This being Seba, the track is melancholy and ultra-polished. It sounds too modern to be a throwback, and feels like a genre exercise than anything exciting. "Cloudless" forgoes breaks entirely, coasting on a precisely programmed minimal rhythm track instead. It's one long, wistful sigh, touched with gentle horns and Reese basslines that sound worn and exhausted. It's one of the Swedish producer's best tracks in recent memory. Ahrenberg can do jungle just fine, but it's with stuff like "Cloudless" that he really makes his mark.
