Levat - Lazaruzz EP

  • Lize Records is part of a new wave of Berlin-based labels putting a fresh spin on deep and minimal house. All have been founded by DJs connected to Club Der Visionaere, a key venue for the hypnotic brand of less-is-more dance music they specialise in. Lize remains the most minimal in the group (which also includes Slow Life and Funhaus). Its first two releases, from Isherwood and St. Joseph, were excellent, but contained the kind of music that often only works with a top-shelf soundsystem and open-minded crowd. As such, Levat's Lazaruzz EP is Lize's most versatile release yet. Its sound isn't too far removed from the muffled textures of Isherwood's maiden outing, but the overall mood is brighter. "Gotta Be A Way" (capped off with vocals from label co-founder Sebastian Rudolph) takes a cue from the Daniel Bell school of bass, with short, infectious stabs that seem to carry a melody of their own. "Rudum" is similarly bottom-heavy but with loopier bass that pleasantly dizzies over the course of the track. Lazaruzz concludes with its most straightforward cut: "Blau Palid N" lands closer to deep house than the rest of the package, and again features an addictive low-end. Rudolph and fellow Lize founder Patrick Poitz clearly know a good bassline when they hear one.
