Calibre - Dreamz Dub

  • Known especially for his prim-and-proper take on drum & bass, Dominick Martin's discography comprises some of the genre's best music, as well as the occasional dip into mediocrity. Dreamz Dub is his third Calibre EP of 2015, and it's easily the best. That's not just because his signature style is in prime form here, but also because he dips into other styles, showing off different personalities on one record. "Another" and "Believe It" are stellar examples of Martin's winning formula. The latter bears the mark of his near-perfect craftsmanship: its soft pads sound like they're made of air, and the bassline is sturdy enough to frame the whole thing without knocking it over. On "Another," pads smear across the background while fuzzy basslines and breathy vocals turn the drop into a warm bear hug. It's all more impressionistic than "Believe It." The mood sours for "Posh Boy," which descends into wobble basslines and diamond-cut drums, but even it feels measured, like Martin's giving you a stern grimace rather than a proper beating. The title track dips into his dubby sensibilities, featuring zig-zag basslines and just the slightest hint of horns. With Martin firing on all cylinders, Dreamz Dub does everything a solid Calibre record should, and what it might lack in novelty it makes up for in immaculate form.
