Cab Drivers - Playroom / A Less Complex Situation

  • A Discogs user described a recent Cab Drivers remix as the "kind of house track that could last for [three] hours." That statement could be applied to most of the Berlin duo's catalogue, which has been dished out via their own Cabinet Records since the mid-'90s. Cab Drivers (real names Daniel Paul and Jens Augustowsky) make loopy, functional house for busy dance floors, and that is exactly what they offer up on Playroom / A Less Complex Situation. In the words of Dylan Thompson, it's "utilitarian dance music"—the sort of tunes equally at home with Bicep as they would be with Seth Troxler, Fred P or Zip. One of the best things about Cab Drivers' brand of house is that it's sneakily multi-dimensional. Its subtlety allows listeners the freedom to choose which elements—between the bassline, drums, atmospherics or overall mood—they focus on. The vibe fostered by the bassline and synth blips on "Playroom" is extremely positive, which is probably what most people will be drawn to. But there's also a lot happening elsewhere, with skipping drums and the occasional vocoder vocal also vying for attention. "A Less Complex Situation" is more subdued and a touch darker, built around jacking drums and a weighty bassline.
