October & Borai - Head 4 Phuture / Too High The Future

  • October and Borai produced the first release on BRSTL, the label run by Shanti Celeste and Idle Hands founder Chris Farrell. That record, 2011's Sticky Fingers / Left Out, had a slow, slightly grainy house sound that the label sparingly revisited amid a steady diet of vocal house cuts and electro-tinged fare. The pair has returned for BRSTL's latest 12-inch, starting the two-tracker off in a more brooding mood. October's solo cut "Head 4 Phuture," has a creeping acid motif that gains traction as thunderclap percussion arrives in irregular cascades. The whole thing threatens to explode on several occasions, but admirably remains subtle with the addition of eerie bass pads. On the flip, "Too High The Future" finds October working with Borai to create a sunny, off-kilter house chugger. Its curlicue keys and summery vocal flecks punctuate a thoroughly stoned background haze.
