Jay Clarke - Entitãs

  • The immediacy of Entitãs hits you first; on his second release for his Blackaxon label, Jay Clarke once again isn't hanging about. He's a producer who learned his craft from the booth up through DJ residencies at the likes of Void and Seventh Day in London—and is better for it. "Entity" shoots straight from the hip with irresistible kicks that would snare even the most reserved listener. There's a whiff of something Bristolian/Mancunian in its woodblock details and subtle skip, but is otherwise a steely basement number, made cooler with shivering hats that hiss throughout. "Ghosts Of Acid" does uses a groovy line, but mostly lives up to its title. Clarke takes a bit more time with this one, allowing the acerbic cloud to creep over ethereal pads. The result is light and lovely compared to "Entity"'s tautness. "Existence Through Perception" closes on a bit of a '90s tip, with ambient strings that morph unexpectedly into a frantic techno workout. It's a surprise, though Entitãs's assortment of references isn't.
