Kevin McPhee - TW EP

  • It's anyone's guess why Kevin McPhee decided to sample underground Memphis rap legend Tommy Wright III for his return to WNCL, but the raw, seedy source material suits his latest single especially well. Like "FRUMMPP," McPhee's Gerry Read collaboration from May, "TW" is a rough-around-the-edges stomper with little but frenetic dance moves on its mind. Unlike "FRUMMPP," however, this track is a lot of fun. It doesn't quite scratch the itch that lingered after 2012's excellent In Circles, but between the 909 smacks, rapidfire beeps and infectiously deadpan chant, it's sure to whip up any party hungry for some ghetto house adrenaline. On the B-side, label boss West Norwood Cassette Library and newcomer C.E.O unleash polar opposite remixes. C.E.O demolishes nearly any semblance of the original, taking the blasted techno of his The Major Edits EP to almost comically abusive extremes, while its counterpart is altogether more warm, easygoing and old-school. In fact, West Norwood Cassette Library digs deeper into Tommy Wright III's "On Da Creep," hijacking the symphonic twinkle of its Gladys Knight & The Pips sample for a series of broken grooves. The manic first half doesn't match "TW" in terms of pure dance floor potency, however, and while the second part is meant to pay homage to all these borrowed recordings, its halftime hip-hop shuffle might've worked better as a standalone track. Still, McPhee's latest for WNCL offers a solid spread of takes on one strange idea.
