Korridor ‎- Taotast

  • Deep techno rarely puts the focus squarely on percussion. It's one of the most pensive, absorbing styles of electronic music out there, often based on spacey samples, dubby synth notes and dense atmospherics. As such, there's not much room for attention-grabbing beats. However, Taotast, the latest EP from Swedish producer Korridor, finds room for adventurous drum programming. Each of its three cuts is built around a heavy-stepping rhythms, adding to the powerful moods across the EP. Each side of Taotast contains a distinct sound. The murky "Acolyitt" and "Futurist" occupy the A-side, making use of slow-moving low-end and subaquatic samples. Foggy atmospherics pair with frantic percussion to make it all the more disorienting—these are tracks you want to focus all your attention on, not zone out to. "Taotast" is more light-hearted and club-friendly by comparison. It also makes use of frenzied, multi-layered percussion, but the accompanying samples are positive and breezy. The 12-minute epic is among the best tracks Northern Electronics has ever dished out, recalling the softer side of Luke Slater's timeless Planetary Funk series. Like Slater's most delicate work back then, this is deep and complex techno for patient and open-minded listeners.
