Heretic - Pollux

  • Eskimo Twins member Timothy Clerkin has mapped out his acid-tinted, atmospheric Heretic guise over the last couple of years. Thanks to some excellent remixes, his EP for Nein might be the most impressive Heretic release yet. The original "Pollux" slowly builds from its low-slung beginnings into a maximalist banger with big, hard-edged synth chords and soaring pads. Everything about it is funky and fleshy enough to bite into. Andrew Weatherall delivers two remixes, depending on your version of the EP. His standard contribution is humid and intoxicating, its guitar-like pads hovering unsteadily over percussive echoes. The "Japanese Import Mix" appears only on the Pollux 12-inch, and further ramps up the thick atmosphere of his first version with a glowing, Peter Hook-esque bassline. Though the best of the record is on its first half, Hardway Bros' rolling, blissful "Boccaccio Remix" runs close. There's little wrong with Antoni Maiovvi's remix, but the way it blends bass arps, vocal snippets and aqueous effects feels a tad perfunctory. Meanwhile, Front de Cadeaux focuses on percussion for their version. And though its sparseness stands out, it lacks the atmosphere and heady drive of the others.
