Freeman - Dariana

  • Scott Fraser is the Glaswegian producer behind Crimes Of The Future, a club night and label he runs with Timothy J. Fairplay that specializes in oddball house, techno and dub. Now he's struck out on his own with DX Recordings, which is focused on his own material and meant strictly for the dance floor. Dariana comes under his Freeman alias. It offers an extended version of a tune that's been floating around for a while and a recently completed track dug up from his archives. "Dariana" balances a simple piano figure over an elephantine kick, slowly incorporating new drum sounds until what initially seems monotonous becomes hypnotic. When the piano finally shifts up an octave or two after the breakdown, it's momentous. "For You" is the older track, and it's a prime slice of vintage tech house. Lean and loopy and built around a wobbly synth line, it modulates just enough to stay interesting through all eight minutes. Both tunes are supplemented by "beats" versions, which are essentially two-minute loops made with swung, Latin-influenced patterns. It's a small adjustment that ends up going a long way—something that goes for all the music on DX Recordings' first release.
