The Sun God - The Sun God And The Myth Lives On Trio

  • The appetites of the young Cejero label are almost as broad as those of its sibling, the Sejerø festival. Early releases came from Brooklyn experimentalists Excepter and resurgent composer Robert Turman. Lately, alongside throwing a series of club nights in its native Copenhagen, the label has turned its attention to dance music. Given the way in which he straddles experimental and dance forms, Jamal Moss is a perfect fit for such a label. This single under his Sun God alias, while offering no surprises for those familiar with Moss's music, features some of his best work of recent times. Both tracks are psychedelic deep-soaks, each unfolding over nine-odd minutes. "Cosmic Chords One" is casually paced, but there's a nagging tension between its grubby low-end and the gleaming synths up above. Somewhere in the midrange, Moss busies himself with a wandering one-finger melody, steering us casually in and out of dissonance. "Cosmic Chords Two" is more frenetic, with a bubbling Italo bassline and, in the latter half, dense flurries of snare drums. Through it all floats a single sustained chord, occasionally drifting to the top of the mix before receding again. With each ascent you expect it to break through into the stratosphere—it never quite does, but it's the struggle that makes it so captivating.
