  • There's a supremely casual air to Time Will Tell, an EP of archival recordings Terrence Dixon has issued under his Population One moniker. With time-stamped titles like "3.26.2013 @ 11.40pm" and "12.1.2008 @ 5.48pm," these four tracks seem to have been plucked from the middle of jam sessions, and if the dates are to be believed, not even a specific time period links them together. Suffice to say that Dixon's first release on 30Drop is a scattered affair, but each track captures him in a particularly audacious mood. Maximalism might come closest to the theme of Time Will Tell. For better or worse, Dixon throws just about his entire arsenal into these tunes, mostly as a way of creating anxiety with discordance ("3.26.2013 @ 11.40pm"), but also to disorient listeners in the rhythmic chaos ("11.18.2013 @ 1:41am"). The warped robo-jazz of "5.26.2012 @ 5.59pm" uses both tactics: the commotion is restrained enough to glean a sense of groove and space from Dixon's arrangement. Similarly, closer "12.1.2008 @ 5.48pm" takes a freeform approach to composition, allowing a halftime arp sequence to ring its crystalline notes over soft drum machines and spaced-out noise.
