Anton Zap - Subculture EP

  • It seems likely that the title of Anton Zap's new EP for Apollo Records is a pun. Subculture could indicate both his affinity for a certain corner of the electronic underground and its predilection for low frequencies. The record wears the latter half of the double entendre on its sleeve. This is bass-centric music that will appeal to many who enjoy a good gut-rattle, but overall the record's stylistic explorations feel antiquated. Of course, an experienced artist like Anton Zap wouldn't release half-finished ideas, but there's something here that feels undercooked all the same. "Pauspapier" has its mistiness dialed in like an outtake from 2013's Water, before "Freefall" livens up the mood with sharper synth patches and strong melodies. Yet the tracks both feel anchored in place: only slight touches are added to the beats and they make little impact. Adding a bit of variety, Subculture's two closing cuts shift to jazz- and hip-hop-oriented sounds, and while they're more fully realized productions, there's still little excitement to be found.
