Pev & Hodge - 21 Versions / What Your Heart Knows

  • In recent years, a brand of heady, turbulent warehouse music has been established in the UK, and the Livity Sound label and collective have been central to this. Label co-founder Peverelist here teams up with another one of the sound's proponents, Hodge, who's been behind some of this year's most interesting records. After collaborating on the excellent Bells, which was released through Pev's Punch Drunk imprint in 2013, Hodge now becomes the first producer outside of the label's founders to record for Livity Sound's main outlet. The Bells was far less frantic than 21 Versions / What Your Heart Knows, a jagged stampede of weighty percussion and razor-sharp melodies. "21 Versions" hammers persistently. Its destination is clear, but with almost no pause for seven minutes, its rolling crescendos eventually start to feel laboured. "What Your Heart Knows" is just as urgent but more cohesive. Clattering hats sit tightly between heavily decayed kicks, while a glassy melody plunges beneath an onslaught of lasers. Signature Livity Sound material, in other words.
